Brasília, 25/08/2010 (MJ) - Upon taking office on Wednesday (25) as president of the National Council for Combating Piracy and Crimes Against Intellectual Property (CNCP), the executive secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Rafael Thomaz Favetti, spoke of the challenges that the Council will face. He argued that the main role of the CNCP should be to curb, through education and information, the demand for pirated products.

For the incumbent president, it is necessary to make people aware that buying a pirated product is often equivalent to financing large criminal organizations. “This cultural change that needs to be made, is perhaps one of the biggest challenges for the Council. For this reason, it is necessary to bet on advertisements, advertising and the use of other means to make consumers aware of the risks of piracy ”, he said.

Among the actions to combat counterfeiting, Favetti cited three basic forms of action: the protection of property rights, the fight against the counterfeiting of sensitive products - the use of which directly affects consumer health, such as medicines - and the promotion of fair economic competition. .

The Council is made up of government agencies and civil society entities represented by sectors affected by piracy in the country. Created in 2004, the CNCP has the task of proposing and coordinating public and private actions to prevent and combat piracy and crimes against intellectual property. The agency acts through repressive actions and to contain the demand for pirated products, promoting educational and economic measures.
