As of April 1, 2008, taxpayers in the fuel and cigarette distributors who do not replace paper invoices with electronic invoices in their business transactions will pay a fine and have their goods seized, in addition to collecting the Circulation Tax of Goods and Services (ICMS) due. This is because, as of this date, paper invoices issued by these sectors will be considered untrue, that is, they will no longer be valid.

The alert is from the Mato Grosso Finance Department (Sefaz / MT), which finalizes the last adjustments to the Electronic Invoice (NF-e) management system. The forecast is to make available, from December 1 of this year, the NF-e production portal to the State taxpayers.

The adviser of Federative Fiscal Relations of Sefaz / MT, Múcio Ferreira Ribas, observes that it is recommended not to leave to issue the electronic document very close to April 1st of the next year or only from that date.

According to him, it is pertinent that companies start to use the document on an experimental basis so that necessary adjustments are made in their operating systems, without running the risk of having a loss in their billing due to structural failures in the issuance of the NF-e.

The implementation of the electronic invoice issuing system will initially reach the segments of fuels and cigarette distributors (ICMS Protocol 30, July 2007) across the country.

The technical coordinator of the National Meeting of State Tax Coordinators and Administrators (Encat) and the NF-e Project, Álvaro Bahia, points out that, for the cigarette segment, the initial requirement will not extend to sale in vehicles with unknown recipient and the wholesale establishments that sell various products not linked to the cigarette industry.
