08/06/2021

The International Congress of the Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI) is one of the most important global events on the protection of trademark and patent rights, a fundamental competitive ethics theme for strengthening the business environment and attracting investments. In its 40th edition, held virtually in October, the event had the participation of the executive president of ETCO, Edson Vismona, in the panel The Illegal Market and Local Divestment Risk.

In his lecture, Vismona presented data from the most recent survey by the National Forum Against Piracy and Illegality (FNCP) on the size of the illegal market in the country, which exceeded R$ 287 billion in 2020. He recalled that illegal trade, piracy and counterfeiting are listed as some of the main global risks identified by the World Economic Forum.

Among the measures to combat illegal practices, the president of ETCO defended the approval of PL 333/1999, which increases the penalties for these crimes and has been stopped in the Chamber of Deputies for over twenty years, and the permanent integration of the actions of power public, with the cooperation of the productive sectors.
