R $ 1,217 billion. This is the amount collected so far in May of the main tax in the state, the Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS), and represents the best result in the entire history of the Secretariat of Finance (Sefaz), in addition to a growth 38,8%, adjusted by the IPCA, and 45,5%, in nominal terms, in comparison with the month of May last year. This is also the third time in the year that the ICMS surpasses the R $ 1 billion mark, repeating the good performances of January and April. The data are from Sefaz.

“There is no doubt that this performance can be credited in particular to three factors: the dynamism of the Bahian economy, which managed to overcome the effects of the crisis, the right measures taken by the federal government and the government of Bahia to combat the effects of the referred crisis, and the serious and competent work of the Sefaz team, with the actions of inspection, recovery of tax credits and combating tax evasion ”, said the Finance Secretary, Carlos Martins.

According to Sefaz data, the collection in May this year was R $ 1,217 billion, against R $ 836,8 million in May 2009 and R $ 781,5 million in May 2008, in nominal terms. In this year, the ICMS collected so far is R $ 4,99 billion, an increase of 26,91% (also in nominal terms), compared to 2009, when the total was R $ 3,93 billion.

“The result for the last month of May is very good, but it is worth mentioning that in May 2009 the economy was still recovering from the effects of the crisis. Therefore, the ICMS was below what, in a normal situation, could have been collected ”, explained the superintendent of Tax Administration at Sefaz, Cláudio Meirelles.
