Brazil is the country where indirect taxes are paid the most, according to an analysis by the president of the Brazilian Institute of Ethics in Competition (ETCO), André Franco Montoro Filho.

“Currently, only 28% of everything that is collected comes from taxes on income and property, while everything else comes from taxes related to production and imports, such as IPI, ICMS, Cofins and Cide” says Montoro Filho.

Indirect taxes are those that affect products and services, therefore more unfair to those who earn less, he says.

“For this reason, even countries like Germany, France and Denmark, where the tax burden is even greater than that of Brazil, have more just and modern tax systems than ours.”
