The informal economy generated R $ 578 billion in Brazil in 2009, equivalent to 18,4% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product, the sum of the wealth produced in the country), points out research published by FGV (Fundação Getulio Vargas) and Etco (Instituto Brazilian Competition Ethics Committee) this Wednesday.

The figure also corresponds to a figure close to Argentina's GDP. The country's so-called underground economy, which comprises the production of goods and services not reported to governments, grew in absolute terms compared to 2003, when it moved around R $ 357 billion.

In the conversion to 2009 values, this value would jump to R $ 523 billion. According to the researchers, what explains this increase is a larger base of GDP, that is, the value moved by the underground economy has hardly changed, because the Brazilian's income has also risen.

Considering the percentage of GDP, however, there was a decrease - that year, the informal economy represented 21% of the production of goods and services in the country.

According to the researcher at Ibre (Brazilian Institute of Economics) at FGV, Fernando de Holanda Barbosa Filho, one of the variables that most contributed to the decrease in this comparison base was the search for credit. This means that companies and workers prefer to bear the cost of formalization in order to have access to finance.

To reach the level of the underground economy, the researchers make calculations based on the demand for money and the number of informal workers, in addition to other variables.
