According to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Ethics in Competition (Etco) and the Brazilian Institute of Economics of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (Ibre / FGV) this Wednesday, R $ 2009 billion were handled in 578 by informal means. The figure comprises all production of goods and services deliberately not reported to governments. The value surpasses the entire Argentine economy.

“The new measurement method is, in reality, a natural and necessary evolution of the index and makes it much more precise, even though, due to the very characteristic of the studied subject, it is obtained in the form of an estimate”, explains Fernando de Holanda Barbosa Researcher son of Ibre / FGV.

Etco hopes that the study will alert society to the seriousness of the issue and mobilize it to take action on it. "We are talking about almost R $ 600 billion, which are outside the formal Brazilian economy," he said.

In 2003, the registered value was R $ 357 billion. In relation to GDP, however, the number showed a decrease, since, at the time, the figure represented 21% of the Brazilian product.
