Paraná is the second state that most consumes contraband products in the country, behind São Paulo, according to the Brazilian Association to Combat Counterfeiting (ABCF). The reason is that the Port of Paranaguá and the border with Paraguay are among the main entry points for counterfeiting, which facilitates the offer and further reduces the cost of articles of this type in the region.

The main accesses via ports for counterfeiting are, in order, Santos, Paranaguá, Itajaí and Rio de Janeiro, according to ABCF. The products usually arrive in the country with false declarations in the import guides and under invoices. With the low number of agents from the Federal Revenue Service and the Federal Police, inspections of containers and goods are carried out by sampling or when there are complaints.

The second gateway for counterfeit goods is via Paraguay, which, even when it occurs from Mato Grosso do Sul, usually passes through Paraná to reach the capital of São Paulo. Also according to the organization, Maringá is the largest national hub for the manufacture of counterfeit auto parts, or reused and sold as new, which also increases Paraná's share.
