By symbolic vote, the Senate passed Provisional Measure 668, which raises taxes on imported goods, including beer, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. According to the approved text, in general, the PIS-Pasep rate for the entry of imported goods in Brazil goes from 1,65% to 2,1%. In the case of Cofins, it goes from 7,6% to 9,65%.

The measure is part of the government's fiscal adjustment package, for which, in addition to increasing revenue, the initiative will protect national industry. The estimate of the economic team is that, with this MP, the annual collection with imports will increase by R $ 1,19 billion as of 2016. This year alone, the impact would be of R $ 694 million.

In the vote of this MP, the Senate also approved a device inserted in it by the Chamber of Deputies, which authorizes Parliament to enter into public-private partnerships (PPPs), a prerogative now exclusive to the Executive. Through the PPPs, the private sector pays for the work and, in return, can exploit the project's services. The device is of interest to the mayor, deputy Eduardo Cunha, because it makes the construction of a shopping mall feasible, a subject currently under discussion in that House.
