Tax evasion is seven times greater than corruption

No issue rivals the news about corruption in coverage and prominence given by the media, a sign of the importance properly attributed to the problem by citizens. Illnesses of greater proportions, however, remain in the shade. Tax evasion, for example, is seven times the size of corruption, but receives minimal attention from society and the news.

The government ceases to collect 500 billion reais a year in the country, calculates the president of the National Union of Attorneys for the National Treasury, Heráclio Camargo. The average annual cost of corruption in Brazil, in 2013 figures, corresponds to 67 billion annually, informs José Ricardo Roriz Coelho, head of the Competitiveness and Technology Department of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo, based on recent calculations.
