The City of Rio de Janeiro hopes to legalize the entire area of the popular market in Uruguaiana, in downtown Rio, known as the camelódromo. To this end, it began on Tuesday (7) the Operation Jerichó to combat piracy, which was carried out in two stages and should end on Friday (10).

Initially, police from the Police Station for the Suppression of Crimes Against Immaterial Property, together with inspectors from the Municipal Public Order Secretariat (Seop), banned the 1,6 boxes from the shopping center for inspection and seized about 3 tons of goods, the most of them counterfeit and stolen.

The second phase of the operation aims to regularize the destination of the camelódromo's boxes. "Starting tomorrow, the city will guide the workers in each box to present the necessary documents for the regularization of the establishment," said Secretary Leandro Matiele.

The coordinator of the Civil Court Order of the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice (TJRJ), Moana Marques Linhares, says that the police infiltrated the place, months before the operation, to identify the merchants who sold counterfeit products. The search was then reduced to about 300 boxes.

The president of the Quadras Committee of the popular market, Iara Silva da Cunha, who has worked at the site for 22 years, defended the action of the Civil Police, as long as only pirated goods are seized. “They are doing their job, I am not against it. But not everyone here works with piracy, ”said Iara.
